Advanced Journeyman Class Descriptions

There is no cost for IBEW Local Union 191 members or travelers working under the 191 agreement.
Classes are offered based on interest; dates will be scheduled once sufficient interest is received.
Classes are available at WATTS in East Wenatchee and at the JATC Mount Vernon Training Center.

Purpose:                                                                                                          

These courses are designed for journey-level workers seeking to expand their knowledge and develop advanced skills.

CEUs:
Advanced classes do not qualify for license renewal CEUs. If CEUs are required, please refer to the JATC’s journey-level classes approved for license renewal.

Foreman Development Series Course – four 8-hour classes

This course prepares craftsmen and women to step confidently into the role of foreman by combining classroom learning with on‑the‑job experience. Students explore real‑life jobsite scenarios, exchange practical ideas, and develop essential skills in communication, planning, crew coordination, productivity, and safety. The program offers a balanced overview of foreman responsibilities and demonstrates how applying industry best practices can improve job performance and overall project competitiveness. Developed with input from a wide range of industry experts, the course provides practical, field‑tested guidance for effective jobsite leadership. This course involves class participation and outside-of-class assignments.

NICET Fire Alarm Level I Exam Preparation – 8-hour class

This course introduces fire alarm systems for individuals preparing to take the NICET Level I Fire Alarm exam. Students will learn how to effectively navigate and apply the key industry standards used in the field. Core instruction includes detailed coverage of the 2022 NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, relevant requirements from the 2020 NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC), and essential calculation and reference methods from the 2020 Ugly’s Electrical Reference.

Through structured lessons, guided code navigation, practical exercises, and sample exam questions, participants will gain the knowledge and confidence needed to understand system components, wiring methods, detector placement principles, power‑supply requirements, and basic inspection and testing concepts. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the skills and reference‑using strategies necessary to successfully challenge the NICET Level I Fire Alarm certification exam and begin their professional pathway in fire protection systems. All students are expected to bring their 2020 or 2023 NEC book and an Ugly’s to every class.

NICET Fire Alarm Level II Exam Preparation – 8-hour class

This course is designed for fire alarm professionals seeking to advance their knowledge and prepare for the NICET Level II Fire Alarm Systems exam. Building on Level I fundamentals, the class equips students with the skills required for system layout, device spacing, wiring design, documentation, and code application at an intermediate technician level. Instruction emphasizes the practical use and interpretation of the 2022 NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, the wiring and installation requirements of the 2020 NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC), and fire protection‑related provisions of the 2021 International Building Code (IBC).

Through instructor‑led lessons, code‑based problem solving and NICET‑style practice questions, participants learn to apply code requirements to real‑world scenarios including notification design, initiating device placement, circuit classification, power calculations, and basic system programming considerations. By the end of the course, students will be well‑prepared to navigate the referenced codes, interpret design criteria, and successfully pass the NICET Level II Fire Alarm Systems exam. All students are expected to bring their 2020 or 2023 NEC book and an Ugly’s to every class.

American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED – 3-Hour class

This instructor-led, in-person course provides hands-on training in First Aid, CPR, and AED use. Participants will build the skills and confidence needed to respond effectively to medical emergencies in the workplace and everyday situations, helping to improve safety for themselves and others.

Prerequisite:
A blended learning component must be completed prior to attending the in-person session. The online course link will be provided within 30 days of the scheduled instructor-led class.

VitalCog Suicide Prevention Training – 2-hour class

This instructor-led training equips participants with practical tools to recognize warning signs of suicide, engage in supportive conversations, and connect individuals with appropriate resources. The course emphasizes awareness, early intervention, and creating a safer, more supportive workplace and community.
